Haldensleben/Charleston, July 20, 2017
On July 20th, the IFA Group, a leading manufacturer of propeller shafts for cars and light utility vehicles, laid the cornerstone for a new plant in Charleston, South Carolina (USA). The new plant is just a few miles away from the currently existing plant. A total investment of $67 million promises to substantially increase production capacities and will create approximately 120 additional jobs. The IFA Group currently employs about 600 people in North America. The IFA Group has a total of eight development and production locations, employing more than 2,500 people worldwide.
The construction of the new plant in Charleston marks the continuation of IFA’s expansion in the global market. The IFA Group just opened a new plant to manufacture half shafts in Poland in June 2017. In 2014, with the addition of a plant in Shanghai, business activities expanded into the Chinese automobile sector. Dr. Robert Gutsche, CEO of the IFA Group, explains the strategic goal: “By 2025, we want to be in the TOP 100 of the world’s largest automobile suppliers. Our plant in Charleston will allow us to establish our dominance in the U.S. prop shaft market, an important milestone along the road to success.”
Beginning in spring 2018 warehouse operations and manufacturing of constant-velocity joints will be integrated into the new plant. This will be followed by a step-by-step relocation of propshaft assembly production from the existing location to the new location. By the end of the relocation an additional 14 assembly lines will be up and running in the 400,000-square foot expandable plant.
